Less than two years after 17-year-old Tapasi Maliks body was recovered from the Nano plant site at Singur, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Suhrid Dutta,Singur CPM zonal committee secretary, and his accomplice Debu Malik, who had been convicted and awarded life imprisonment by a Sessions Court in the murder case.

Malik was arrested on June 25,2007 by the CBI. On the basis of Maliks confessional statement, the CBI arrested Dutta.

Appearing for the convicts, advocate Sekhar Bose told the HC that the procedure of recording the confessional statement by the magistrate was illegal since the investigating officer of the CBI was present while it was being done. CBI counsel Ranjan Roy argued that the agency had recorded the confessional statement as per CrPC,but the division bench which heard the case was not convinced and granted bail to the two.
