SIT cop seizes CD,another orders probe

First, they made complaints against each other in the court.

First, they made complaints against each other in the court. Now,the three members of the Special Investigation Team SIT formed to probe the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter are busy sniping at each other.

The latest bout began when one of the members,Satish Verma, raided the Forensic Sciences Laboratory FSL office in Shahibaug area of Ahmedabad and confiscated a compact disk CD,containing allegedly doctored photographs of the victims, taken soon after the 2004 encounter in which four alleged Lashkar operatives were killed.

The FSL made a complaint at the Meghaninagar Police Station against Verma and Ahmedabad ACP V R Toliya for forcibly seizing data from FSL premises.

Sources said Verma had reportedly found during his probe that the FSL had doctored the photographs of the victims to support the police theory that it was an encounter. They said Verma suspected FSL deputy director S G Khandelwal, among others,of fabricating the CD.

Another SIT member Mohan Jha,who is a joint commissioner of police currently in-charge as city police commissioner, ordered that the FSLs complaint against Verma be probed. After a complaint was received from FSL at the Meghaninagar Police Station,it was transferred to Shahibaug Police Station. I have asked the DCP to get it probed.

Jha said ACP M V Maheta will probe the complaint himself. But Maheta, when contacted, denied having been asked to do conduct any such inquiry.

Joint Commissioner of Police Atul Karwal of Zone II,in which the FSL office is located, said,The FSL has made an allegation against the nature of SIT investigation and claimed Verma had seized documents from them. A proper inquiry would be conducted in the matter.

Verma, meanwhile, stood his ground. I went to the FSL to collect case material. If they claim they were forced to give the documents and material, its their call, he said.

Earlier,Verma had told the High Court that there was enough material to suggest that the encounter might have been staged by the police.

According to the police theory,Ishrat,Javed and two alleged Pakistani nationals were LeT terrorists out to kill CM Narendra Modi when they were shot dead by them while trying to escape.
