SIMI regrouping: UP gets MP alert

The Uttar Pradesh anti-terrorist squad has been alerted by its Madhya Pradesh counterpart about regrouping of SIMI activists in the state.

The Uttar Pradesh anti-terrorist squad has been alerted by its Madhya Pradesh counterpart about regrouping of SIMI activists in the state,a senior official from the Madhya Pradesh ATS squad said Saturday.

The alert was sent some time ago on the basis of information collected while keeping surveillance on the movement of Zakir Hussain.

The official said they had been keeping track of Zakir for past one month and telephonic conversation between the SIMI operative and his associates revealed that the outfit had started organising meetings in different states and had started regrouping.

Two diaries recovered from the possession of Zakir also contained names and the addresses of SIMI men in Maharashtra,Karnataka,Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.

Most of them were arrested between 2001 and 2003 when the central government had imposed a ban on the outfit, and a few of them were arrested again in the terror blast cases over the past three years, the official said.

The names mentioned in Zakirs diaries included Shahbaz Ahmed,a native of Bhadohi Sant Ravidas Nagar district, who was arrested in connection with the Jaipur serial blast case from Maulviganj area of Lucknow in August 2008 and is now lodged in Jaipur jail.

The diary also contained addresses of Shahbazs native place, his wifes address and the computer institute he owned at Maulviganj locality in Lucknow, along with the date on which Shahbaz was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan ATS.
