A day after minister of state for commerce and industry Jyotiraditya Scindia told Parliament that only two states and two Union Territories have agreed in writing to FDI in multi-brand retail, commerce and industry minister Anand Sharma said that the reply was not correct and he would inform Parliament about it.
There is an error which has crept in. The (commerce and industry) ministry has been asked to amend that reply. That is not correct. I shall inform Parliament about the correction. There is a discrepancy in that, Sharma told reporters here today.
However,Sharma refused to give any timeline on implementation of decision, which is being opposed by various states, including West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
The minister is likely to add six more states, namely Haryana,Andhra Pradesh,Maharashtra,Uttarakhand,Assam and Jammu and Kashmir in his reply.
Yesterday,in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha,Scindia had said,Till date, written communications, indicating support for foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail trade, have been received from the governments of Delhi,Manipur and from Daman & Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli.
Sharma said that many states still have reservations about the decision. Discussions are on with all stakeholders to arrive at a consensus,he added. Unanimity should not be confused as consensus, he said.
