Sangli on the boil,1 killed

One person was killed and five others were seriously injured in fresh communal violence that erupted in Ichalkaranji on Monday evening.

One person was killed and five others were seriously injured in fresh communal violence that erupted in Ichalkaranji on Monday evening. The deceased was identified as Vasant Appa Awaghade (40). The violent mob also torched 10 vehicles. Curfew was imposed in Ichalkaranji in the evening.

On Sunday,Prof P A Bhisure of Bapuji Salunkhe College,Miraj,died after sustaining injuries allegedly in police lathicharge. Bhisure was going to his college on a bicycle when he got caught in the lathicharge. He died at the college premises.

The curfew imposed in Miraj and Sangli on Saturday night has been extended till Tuesday. Additional Superintendent of Police,Sangli,Balasaheb Waghmode said the situation is under control,except for a few incidences of violence and stone pelting. Nevertheless,after taking stock of the situation,the curfew in Miraj has been extended up to 2 pm and in Sangli up to 10 am on Tuesday,he said.

State’s Director General of Police S S Virk told reporters in Sangli on Monday that the police have arrested 208 people and the situation is under control. On Monday,the authorities announced relaxation of curfew in Miraj for half-an-hour in the morning.

“I was coming out of the mosque after afternoon prayers when a mob attacked me,” said Latif Mulla,who was injured in the violence on Sunday and was admitted to a local hospital in Sangli.

Indutai Zumde,who was also injured in Sunday’s police lathicharge,said,“We were not aware of the happenings in the city. Suddenly,the police appeared in the street and began caning us. I tried to run away,but could not escape. Now,I have an injured leg.” Sanjay Athanikar,another injured,blamed the police for not taking prompt action. “When the clashes erupted on first day,the police didn’t act quickly and nobody was arrested. They only acted when violence erupted in the region,” he said.
