With the country reeling under a all time high unemployment figures, the White House said that the USD 787 billion mega stimulus package is estimated to have yielded as many as 63,000 jobs so far.
By the end of 2010 year,it is expected to generate more than 700,000 job years of employment,Christina Romer,Chair,Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) to President Barack Obama, said. Of the USD 787 billion stimulus package,so far USD 263 billion has been spent.
“So as of 2009,quarter four, what we estimate is that the clean-energy spending has created 52,000 clean-energy jobs and another 11,000 induced jobs throughout the economy. So that gives you a sense,a total of 63,000 in this area,” she said.
“And our bottom-line number is that this investment will yield 700,000 or actually more than 700,000 job years of employment by the end of 2012. So that gives you a sense that this is not only a big part of the spending; it’s a big part of the job creation under the act,” Roemer said.
The CEA estimates that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) added between three and four percentage points to real GDP growth in 2009:Q3 and between 1½ and 3 percentage points in 2009:Q4. It has raised the level of GDP as of 2009:Q4 by roughly 2 per cent, relative to what it otherwise would have been.
CEA also estimates that the ARRA has raised employment relative to what it otherwise would have been by between 1½ and 2 million jobs as of 2009:Q4.
