The government has given Defence Production Secretary R K Mathur the additional charge as Defence Secretary for three months.
Mathur has held several tenures in the ministry,including as an Additional Secretary and a Special Secretary between 2008-11. Sources said that he will take over as the next Defence Secretary as the government is set to clear his name for the post. This will effectively give him a tenure of two years and three months. Mathur is an expert on defence issues and has been the force behind the defence procurement policy as well as reforms in offsets and involving the private sector in defence production.
