Poll code doesn’t prevent Govt from cutting fuel prices: PC

P Chidambaram replied in the negative when asked whether anything prevented the government from reducing fuel prices further even after the model code of conduct before the next Lok Sabha polls.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram replied in the negative when asked whether anything prevented the government from reducing fuel prices further even after the model code of conduct before the next Lok Sabha polls.

“In my view,no,” said Chidambaram replying to a query on whether there was anything which could prevent the government from cutting fuel prices further.

He,however, added that this was his own view ‘which is of no consequence’. Speculation has been rife over the possibility of the government further effecting a price cut in the diesel prices.

Asked on whether the government was in a hurry to clear proposals just before the polls,Chidambaram said,“Tell me which of these is an unusual proposal. These are all usual proposal.”

On the turmoil in Bangladesh, the Home Minister said that “our borders are secure and the BSF is on alert” and that he did not think that the dispute will spill over into Indian territory.

Asked whether Thursday’s was the last Cabinet meeting before the general elections,Chidambaram said that till May 22,“there will be a cabinet meeting every Thursday”.
