Mexico's oil is heavy and refiners need it to blend with lighter US oil to produce diesel fuel, gasoline and other products. Tariffs would drive up the cost of those imports - and Trump has said he would increase levies by 5 per cent monthly until they reach 25 per cent in October.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who announced the reduction in prices through his twitter handle, said: “This would give huge relief to common citizens. The net effect to the people in Maharashtra will be a reduced price of Rs 5 per litre (on petrol prices).”
