Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Thursday dwelt on corruption in the UPAs flagship programme for aam aadmi ,the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS),an election issue in UP.
Speaking at an NREGS function, the two leaders admitted that complaints relating to irregularities in the scheme could not be ignored.
The Prime Minister said his government was trying to ensure that there must not be a delay of more than 15 days in paying the NREGS wages.
My biggest concern is to ensure timely wage payments to the workers. For this, banks and post offices will have to increase their reach, Singh said.
Sonia said corruption in NREGA was an insult to Mahatma Gandhi after whom the scheme is named.
