Thousands of Indians along with locals flocked to get a glimpse of superstar Aamir Khan at the premiere of his latest home production Peepli [Live. The 45-year-old actor was in Melbourne on August 6 to promote his latest film at the ongoing Melbourne International Film Festival 2010. The movie is being featured along with other four Bollywood films under a special category called Not Quite Bollywood.
Prior to Peepli [Lives special screening,Aamir,wearing an Indian outfit,also attended a special reception organised by the Victorian government. Innovation Minister Gavin Jennings joined by community leaders and film industry representatives welcomed the superstar.
India is the largest film-producing country in the world producing up to 1,000 films a year,which is more than Hollywood. Were excited that the filmmakers have chosen Melbourne for the Australian premiere of Peepli [Live,allowing Australian audiences to see the film before it screens in India, Jennings said. Victoria and India have a long and successful relationship when it comes to turning movie dreams into screen magic including the recent films shot here like Orange and Chak De India!, he added.
Helmed and written by Anusha Rizvi in her debut directorial venture,the film is a satire on the urban and rural divide and the subsequent media and political response in India. Victorian audiences have embraced Bollywood and Indian cinema,and are keen to learn more about India,thanks to Victorias growing local Indian community and Indias role as a film powerhouse, Jennings said.
Peepli [Live stars Omkar Das Manikpuri,Raghubir Yadav,Nawazuddin Siddiqui,Naseeruddin Shah and Malaika Shenoy in key roles.
