The civil aviation ministry has termed the allegations by various political rivals on irregularities in sale of slots by Jet Airways at Londons Heathrow airport to Etihad as baseless and false.

The ministry,in a release, has said that the Indian government does not have any say in the award or sale of slots at Heathrow. Prior to the announcement of a deal to sell 24 per cent stake to Etihad,Jet Airways had got into a sale and leaseback of slots at Heathrow with Etihad for around Rs 400 crore.

Politicians, including Nishikant Dubey of BJP,Dinesh Trivedi of Trinamool Congress and Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy had claimed that the Heathrow slots were owned by the government and not Jet Airways.

A government release added that the system of slot trading is not available at various airports in India.

However,in case of Heathrow Airport, once the slot has been allocated to the airline, the airline after two years gets the grandfather rights and the airline is entitled to trade the slot to another airline by way of sale/lease etc, the release said.
