NIA team visits AMU campus

Purohit plot: Seeks details of Joshis 1999 visit.

A team of the National Investigation Agency NIA visited the Aligarh Muslim University AMU campus on Thursday to collect details of a January 1999 incident following which a blast was planned on the university campus.

Sources said Lt Colonel Srikant Purohit,an accused in the 2006 Malegaon blast case, had planned to trigger a blast at AMU after Murli Manohar Joshi, the then HRD minister in the NDA government, was denied entry to the campus following a strong protest by university students in January 1999.

AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar confirmed that a NIA team visited the campus and collected details about the January 1999 incident. NIA official asked about the objective of Murli Manohar Joshis visit in 1999 and the sequence of events which had occurred on the campus then, Abrar said.

The NIA team talked to Abrar and H A S Zafri, who was pro vice-chancellor in 1999. It also checked the news reports published after that incident.

Abrar said then V-C Mahmoodur Rehman had invited Joshi for an iftaar party at his residence on the campus.
