Two days after the arrest of suspended DIG Sanjiv Bhatt, his family continued to get two armed guards for security, notwithstanding the fact that the officer had been seeking more security in view of the threat he and his family faced after he gave evidence against Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

His wife has also raised concern about her husband’s security. Some of the guards who came in the duty shifts had been recruited as late as four days back before they were posted at the officer’s house.

Bhatt’s wife,Shweta Bhatt, had written a letter to Director General of Police Chitranjan Singh and Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha, saying the security threat to her husband has increased. She had stated that she fears a threat to Bhatt from Gujarat Police.

‘Nothing ever happened about his security issue. He had one security officer with him and after some heated debates on the issue,Ahmedabad police added one more constable to his security, who remains outside the house. He made several requests and after his arrest,I also expressed my concern for his security in the letter I wrote to senior cops. His security threat is increasing day by day,” Shweta said.

After Bhatt was suddenly shifted to the Ahmedabad Crime Branch office from Ghatlodia police station on Friday night,Shweta had written to the DGP and Ahmedabad commissioner that she has serious apprehensions that Bhatt may be physically ill-treated inside the jail. “The Ahmedabad police claimed that we are safe and Sanjiv is also safe. The police commissioner has completely denied that Sanjiv faces any threat,” she added.

City police commissioner Sudhir Sinha said,“There is no threat to Sanjiv Bhatt. Our security assessment says that he doesn’t have any threat at all even after his arrest. We don’t think he needs an extra security.”

Earlier,Bhatt had requested the state police to provide him with at least a ‘Y’ grade security cover. Based on the request, the State Intelligence Bureau had ordered an assessment on March 7. The Ghatlodia police had concluded in their security assessment report prepared on March 30 that Bhatt “may be” given a ‘Y’ grade security that comprises of 11 personnel.

However on June 3,the city police concluded on the further assessment report prepared by the Ahmedabad Special Branch that Bhatt doesn’t need a security cover at all. After his arrest on Friday, the family is more worried about his security since they believe he was arrested because a few politicians fear serious action against them.

The policemen on duty outside Bhatt’s home said that most of the old security personnel have left. The city police headquarters changes the security officer often, the recent one being just four-day old, they added.

Meanwhile, the family had a sigh of relief today that no more policemen came to do a search in their house. Also, they did not come to hand over the copy of the search warrant dated September 30 and October 1,and that of the panchanama.
