Ranjan Daimary,a dreaded militant leader and founder president of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland NDFB who was handed over to India by Bangladesh on Saturday, was remanded in 12-day police custody by the chief judicial magistrate of Kamrup district here on Sunday.

Daimary alias Ronsaigra Nabla Daimary alias D R Nabla was taken to the CJM court amid tight security from the Special Branch headquarters of the Assam Police.

Interestingly, while advocate Minati Saikia appeared for the government,no lawyer turned up to plead for Daimary. The Guwahati Lawyers Association had on Saturday resolved not to extend legal support to the NDFB chief as a mark of protest against one of the serial explosions of October 30,2008 that killed several lawyers in the CJM campus.

Daimary,50,arrested immediately in connection with Special Operations Unit Case No 2/98,was seen wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans. While the police had sought 14 days custody, the CJM granted only 12 days. He was driven away to the Assam Police SB headquarters within less then 10 minutes from the court campus.
