In an incident that has again shone harsh light on the criminal justice system,a man being tried for murder was escorted out of a Meerut jail by two policemen on the pretext of producing him in court and taken to a lawyers chamber to be with his wife.
Soon after it was reported by the local media, which found that no hearing of the case against Haji Izlal was scheduled that day,the incident was brought to the notice of Jail Minister Rajendra Chaudhary. I have sought a detailed report from IG Meerut. All those involved will face severe action. This is a very serious issue, Chaudhary said.
The policemen who took Izlal out of the jail have been suspended but since the issue has now snowballed into a controversy, more heads are expected to roll, sources said.
Izlal was arrested on May 27,2008 for the murder of three students of Meerut College Sudhir Ujjawal,Sunil Dhaka and Punit Giri four days earlier. He is the main accused.
Izlal, the sources said, fudged his papers, with the help of some prison staff,to show he was scheduled to appear in court on May 28,the day some 400 under-trials were to be produced in courts.
The papers brought to me clearly showed Izlal was to be produced in court on May 28. So he was sent out of jail with others. It is not possible to keep a track of papers to judge the veracity of all those sent to court on a particular day, SSP,Prisons,H S Rizvi said.
The question, however, remains why the police and prison authorities werent more careful since a similar incident had occurred just three days earlier. On May 25,there was uproar in a local court after lawyers found three women with two under-trials in the chamber of a lawyer.
SP,City,is conducting an inquiry into the issue which is of a serious nature, Meerut IG Bhavesh Kumar Singh said. Meanwhile, the two constables who had taken Izlal to court have been placed under suspension.
