A team of Special Task Force reached Umaria on Monday to probe the brutal murder of a scribe and his family members but the police continued to link the crime to the kidnapping of a government officers son while ruling out the involvement of a coal mafia.
Chandrika Rai,a Umaria-based stringer for Hindi newspapers, was found murdered at his office-cum-residence along with his wife and two children late on Saturday.
State Home Minister Umashankar Gupta said investigators had got crucial leads but refused to divulge information. He said the CID would investigate and rejected the Oppositions demand for a CBI inquiry.
The police said the killers appeared to know the scribe as he had let them in late in the night. It did not appear to be a professional job because the killers used pointed objects like scissors.
The police said the most probable cause appeared to be personal enmity, which could have stemmed from the kidnapping of Anant Jharia, the eight-year-old son of a government officer. The boy returned home, unharmed, within 49 hours.
The kidnappers allegedly made a call to a phone purchased on Rais behalf. The murders took place within hours of the boys return on Friday.
