Having taken over the Medical Council of India (MCI) after it was dissolved last month, the six-member Board of Governors has decided to reassess all the 86-odd recommendations made by erstwhile MCI regarding the renewal of permission/setting up of new colleges or granting recognition to institutes.
While a new set of assessors, who have been picked up from seven top central institutes, has started the assessment, the permanent inspectors who were earlier entrusted with the task by the MCI have stepped down.
According to Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin, chairperson of the newly formed Board of Governors, the need for re-assessment was felt as they were receiving complaints about the earlier decisions taken by Dr Ketan Desai.
Although Gian Sagar Medical College,Patiala Dr Desai was allegedly caught striking a Rs 2-crore deal for allowing a course in the college has received a clean chit from a panel formed by Union Health Ministry,Sarin says that doesnt make their job easy. Assessment will be done again by our assessors and final decision will be taken as per assessment, he adds.
All these medical colleges are supposed to compile baseline data and submit it to the Board of Governors. We are giving a fair chance to all. In fact, out of the 86 cases,we have already got data on 79-odd cases, says the chairperson of the newly formed Board of Governors.
About 43 assessment teams, which are also seeing to complaints of corruption, have gone across the country and will subit reports soon.
