Rajapaksa strips Fonseka of rank,medals

Colombo: Former Sri Lankan Army chief Gen Sarath Fonseka was on Saturday stripped off his rank,medals and pension after President Mahinda Rajapaksa ratified the verdict of his conviction by a court martial. The court martial had found Fonseka guilty of dabbling in politics while heading the countrys military last year. The President in his capacity of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed forces has confirmed the findings and the punishment handed down by the first court martial, a military official said.

16 of Punjabi origin shot dead by militants in Pak

Islamabad: Gunmen shot dead at least 16 people of Punjabi origin in two separate incidents of ethnic killings in Balochistan on Saturday. A group of gunmen riding motorcycles intercepted a passenger bus going from Lahore to Quetta in Aab-e-Gum on Saturday. They separated Baloch and non-Baloch passengers and opened fire at 15 people after identifying them as residents of Punjab province. Ten people were killed. In the second attack,gunmen shot dead six workers from Multan in Punjab in Quetta.

ISLAMABAD: A case of the deadly,waterborne disease cholera has been confirmed in Pakistans flood-ravaged northwest,and aid workers expect it is not isolated,the UN said on Saturday. The chilling discovery underscores the latest threat to the millions whose lives have been disrupted by the crisis and came as new flood surges hit the south.

4 killed in Baghdad checkpoint shootings

BAGHDAD: Gunmen killed four Iraqi security personnel on Saturday. Gunmen killed two policemen asleep in their car in New Baghdad,said an officer. They then set the car on fire. A half-hour later,a drive-by shooting killed two more policemen in the Amil area. It was not clear if the shootings were carried out by the same attackers.
