US pilot detained for showing underwear in Brazil
Sao Paulo: A United Airlines pilot was briefly detained at the international airport in Rio de Janeiro after lowering his pants during a security screening,police said on Saturday. Pilot Michael D Slynn,49,was asked to remove his belt and shoes as part of a routine security screening on Friday afternoon. In response,Slynn laughed at security guards and lowered his pants to his ankles,said a police spokesman who was prohibited by departmental rules from giving his name.
New General wont alter Afghan plan
KABUL: Americas top military officer assured Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday that newly chosen NATO commander Gen David Petraeus would pursue the policies of his ousted predecessor,whom the Afghan leader warmly praised for reducing civilian casualties. For now,no changes have been proposed,said a spokesman for visiting Adm Mike Mullen,chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During a 45-minute meeting with the Afghan leader,Mullen explained the events that surrounded US President Barack Obamas decision to dismiss McChrystal.
Chinese leader tries to commit suicide
BEIJING: A local Communist leader who was administering a county,home of many top Chinese army generals had attempted suicide,allegedly stressed by work pressure,but survived after he was rushed to hospital on time by his supporters. Party chief of Hongan county in Hubei province Xiong Liangxiao,who was under tremendous work pressure,attempted to commit suicide by slashing his wrist with a blade while driving,Huanggangs municipal government said. Xiong was rushed to a local hospital immediately and his condition is stable,state run China Daily reported on Saturday.
Charges framed against BDR guards
Dhaka: A Bangladeshi special court on Saturday framed mutiny charges against 667 troopers of the BDR border guards for the 2009 carnage that killed 57 Army officers,including its chief Major General Shakil Ahmed. The Special Court-5 headed by BDR Director General Mohammad Rafiqul Islam framed the mutiny charges against 667 BDR jawans of 24 Rifle Battalion linked to the February 25-26 carnage at its Pilkhana headquarters in the capital,the Star Online said.
Teen sailor defends family against critics
SAINT-DENIS: Sixteen-year-old Californian sailor Abby Sunderland was reunited with her brother on Saturday and defended her family against criticism that she had been too young to try to sail around the world alone. Im really disappointed that things didn8217;t go as planned, Sunderland said after coming to shore early on Saturday on the French island of Reunion off of east Africa,brought by a French patrol boat.
