A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs letter to DMK chief M Karunanidhi,in which he assured priority would be given to the welfare of Tamils in Sri Lanka, reached here, the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO),led by the DMK,on Wednesday cited information received from the island nation to make clear its dissatisfaction over the post-conflict scenario.
Even as it thanked the PM for his assurance in a letter to the DMK chief that his government has accorded the highest and most important priority to the resettlement and rehabilitation of the Tamil population, which,it said, would provide succour to the Tamils there, the TESO meeting on Wednesday here said that India should make efforts to ensure basic rights for them by moving a resolution seeking UN intervention.
The meeting attended by Karunanidhi,DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan,VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan, among others formally decided to send a delegation comprising Karunanidhis son and party treasurer M K Stalin and parliamentary party leader T R Baalu to meet UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon and the UNHRC at Geneva to submit a memorandum demanding UN intervention, among other petitions.
Speaking to the media,Karunanidhi said that the rehabilitation work undertaken there was not satisfactory. The continuing presence of Lankan army personnel in Tamil areas even after the conflict was over indicated that peace has not dawned as widely expected,he said. Despite claims otherwise, atrocities inside the camps are continuing, just as the sufferings faced by those outside them,he said. I wish the Government of India should do much more than what the Lankan government has been doing for the welfare of the Tamils. The Centre should consider this positively and cooperate in this regard, he said.
