Kudankulam: Sea siege held against plant commissioning

Coinciding with the second anniversary of the nuclear plant disaster at Fukushima in Japan, agitating villagers near the Kudankulam nuclear plant

Coinciding with the second anniversary of the nuclear plant disaster at Fukushima in Japan, agitating villagers near the Kudankulam nuclear plant staged a sea-siege on Monday against the commissioning of the plant.

Hundreds of protesters took to the sea near the plant starting in the morning, demanding the Centre abandon the plan to commission the atomic reactor and convert it into a National Model Energy Park with solar and tidal power stations, and windmills. The authorities refused to share any public documents on the KKNPP and to reveal any truth about the leaks, repairs and technical problems, said Peoples Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE).

With the district administration imposing a curfew within seven-km radius of the plant for a 30-day period starting Sunday, police personnel were deployed in the region ahead of Mondays sea siege.

Meanwhile, the police registered a case regarding a reported explosion in Kuthankuli village. Police said nature of explosion blast was yet to be ascertained. The PMANE,however, has already alleged that there was an effort to malign their peaceful protest.
