Kinagi’s next a STYLISH FILM

Wanted, directed by Ravi Kinagi and produced by Ashok Dhanuka,is touted to be the most stylised Bengali film made till date.

Wanted, directed by Ravi Kinagi and produced by Ashok Dhanuka under the banner of Eskay Movies Production,is touted to be the most stylised Bengali film made till date. Starring Jeet,Sharad Kapoor and Srabonti in lead roles, the movie has two song sequences that have been shot in Bangkok. “Wanted is the most stylised film in Bengali made till date. It promises the magic of a suspense thriller, the soft romance of a love story and the joys of family life,” says Kinagi. The filmmaker, who directed the hit Poran Jaaye Joliya Re last year, started his career with Oriya films. He later went on to make Bangla films, most of which were big hits at the box-office.

An interesting feature of Wanted is that it offers a microcosm of the cosmopolitan nature of Bengali cinema that is no longer confined to geography, ethnicity or language. The producers,Dhanukas, are settled in Kolkata but are non-Bengali. Jeet is a Sindhi-speaking actor equally fluent in Bengali. Sharad Kapoor speaks Punjabi. Kinagi is from Orissa. The music director and the rest of the acting cast are Bengali. But as earlier films like Saathi and Champion have shown, this cosmopolitan feature widens the horizons of Bengali cinema rather than narrowing it.

“The story revolves around Raja (Jeet) who is an orphan and grows up to be a hardcore contract killer. During one of his operations, the police chase him. While trying to escape,he unwittingly becomes the reason for the death of Puran,a runaway who is returning home after 12 years. To save himself from getting caught,Raja assumes Puran’s identity and goes to his village to join his family. The rest of the film deals with how Raja blends himself into the family, solves their problems and proves his innocence,” Kinagi elaborates.

“Though this is an out-and-out potboiler with all the ingredients of a masala film replete with songs and foreign locations, fights and dance numbers,Wanted also highlights how a family can change the life of a contract killer like Raja who has never had a family of his own. We have titled the film Wanted as Raja is wanted by the police right through the film,” says Kinagi. An additional attraction of the film is Sharad Kapoor, who plays the role of a CBI officer and Raja’s friend and tries to help him out of this situation. The movie has five melodious song numbers scored by Rajesh Roy.

Asked how he chose Jeet as the hero, especially since the actor has not delivered a hit in the last five years,Kinagi says,“While working with him in Champion,I discovered how cooperative, hardworking and talented he is. So,even when the whole industry practically ditched him as a lost case,I had complete faith in him. Every Friday, public opinion changes and one Friday it will change for Jeet as well. I’m confident that he will come back with a bang. If I have not cast him till now, that is only because I was looking for the right story and role that would do justice to his talent and suit his screen image. He has gone through a bad phase for some time but every actor goes through it. I am sure he will captivate the audience with Wanted,” Kinagi sums up.

Others in the cast include Biplab Chatterjee,Biswajit Chakraborty,Aritra Dutta child actor Banik and Kamalika. Sharad Kapoor stepped in almost by accident.

“Sharad and I were chatting casually. When I narrated the story to him and asked him if he would like to portray the role of a CBI officer,he was ecstatic. It did not matter to him that he was not the film’s hero. He is handsome, acts well, has a good voice and has no starry airs. He knows Bengali very well as he has been virtually brought up in this city,” says a happy Kinagi.
The film is slated to release soon.
