Ishrat case: HC picks new SIT chief

The court also did not accept the state’s suggestion to give the probe to a Special Task Force appointed by it

The Gujarat High Court on Thursday reconstituted the three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case and appointed a 1980-batch Maharashtra-cadre IPS officer,Dr Satyapal Singh,as its chairman.

Earlier, the court had released Delhi-cadre IPS officer Karnal Singh from the chairmanship of the SIT on his request and asked the central government to give names of senior central police officers. On Thursday,ASG Pankaj Champaneri gave three names to the division bench of Justices Jayant Patel and Abhilasha Kumari, from which Singh was chosen.

The court also ordered that all the three SIT members will conduct the probe. Earlier, the court had bifurcated the work of the SIT,giving member Satish Verma a free hand in investigation and giving Mohan Jha the administration work.

The court also did not accept the state’s suggestion to give the probe to a Special Task Force appointed by it.
