India to give $55 mn aid to Malawi

As part of India’s efforts to reach out to the people of Malawi,Vice-President Hamid Ansari on Friday announced an assistance of US $55 million for the south African country.

Addressing a banquet hosted by President Bingu wa Mutharika,Ansari,who is on a week-long tri-nation visit to Africa,said India would like to extend a line of credit of US $50 million for Malawi to support its development goals besides giving four million in grants for its agriculture,health and education sectors.

He also announced a grant of US $1 million as emergency relief for the country following a series of earthquakes that caused loss of lives and property there.

The Indian and Malawi government also signed agreements on cooperation in agriculture and energy generation.
