India asks all sides to abjure violence

Indian mission in Cairo was in close contact with all sections of the Indian community.

New delhi: Expressing concern,India Friday asked all sides in Egypt to abjure violence,exercise maximum restraint and engage in dialogue to restore peace. It also said the Indian mission in Cairo was in close contact with all sections of the Indian community and maintaining active liaison with the authorities concerned to ensure their continued safety. — PTI

Canada shuts embassy in Egypt

Ottawa: Canada has shuttered its embassy in Egypt,citing concerns about staff safety amid growing unrest in Cairo. A spokeswoman for Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs said Thursday the ministry would evaluate the security situation over the forthcoming days and the mission may be reopened if things calm down as early as Sunday. — PTI

UN Security Council to meet on Egypt

United Nations: The UN Security Council has scheduled an emergency briefing on the latest developments in Egypt following the government’s deadly crackdown on supporters of Morsi. Britain,France and Australia requested the council meeting and the UN spokesman’s office said Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson will brief the council behind closed doors at 5:30 p.m. EDT (2130 GMT) yesterday. UN diplomats said they do not expect the council to issue a statement or adopt a resolution Thursday.
