
BJP general secretary Amit Shah was the star attraction at Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitleys New Year celebrations. Despite the presence of top party leaders,Shah found himself surrounded by mediapersons wherever he went. And,mindful of his new-found importance,Shah obliged and held forth all through. In fact,he was among the last of the senior leaders to leave the venue,giving a patient hearing to all who approached him.

The Archaeological Survey of India and culture ministry may be heaving a sigh of relief with the embarrassing Unnao excavation issue well behind them,but IIT-Kanpur is still in the process of disassociating itself from the controversy. Disciples of the seer,Shobhan Sarkar,had deposited Rs 4 lakh with IIT-Kanpur to have its GPS experts map the treasure site. Though the IIT had sent its team to Unnao,the district administration did not permit them to work due to law and order considerations. Now,the IIT is in the process of returning the money to Sarkars ashram.

The month-long cold war between Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath and Secretary Nita Chaudhry is set to come to an end with the latter heading out of the ministry. A K Jain,Secretary,Department of Official Languages,will replace Chaudhry. He will take charge Friday the fourth Secretary in two years. Chaudhry had begun with an excellent working relationship with Tirath. But after a series of run-ins with colleagues and complaints,Tirath had warned her to mind her behaviour. Shealso ordered that all files be routed directly to her.
