The Andhra Pradesh Police are investigating two cases of gruesome dowry incidents, which left one woman struggling for life and another dead on the eve of her first wedding anniversary. In both the cases, the husbands are the main accused, having allegedly attacked the women despite collecting nearly Rs 1 crore from them as dowry.

The husband of one is studying in final year at IIM-Indore while the other is a deputy commercial tax officer. In the case of officer K Satish Kumar, while he and his wife Padmavathi had been married for nine years, she allegedly paid the price for not bringing in more money as punishment after bearing a second daughter recently.

While Kumar and his entire family are absconding, his 39-year-old wife is in a serious state. Police said Kumar tried to slit Padmavathis throat on Sunday. When she tried to defend herself,he also tried to chop off her hands. Kumar initially fled after leaving his wife bleeding, but later returned to admit her to hospital. He is missing since.

It was the hospital that contacted Padmavathys parents. In their complaint, the parents said that though they had given nearly Rs 1 crore as dowry to him,Kumar was harassing her for more to make up for the daughters she had borne.

G Anantalakshmis parents too had given her husband nearly Rs 1 crore as dowry. The 21-year-old was strangled, her body chopped to pieces and disposed of 150 km from Hyderabad sometime after May 20. Monday would have been their first wedding anniversary.

Husband Gangavarupu Niranjan,27,is an MBA student at IIM-Indore. Both of them hail from Guntur and got married on May 23 last year, Investigating Officer Srinivas Reddy said.

While Niranjan was staying in Indore,Anantalakshmi was living in a hostel at Vanasthalipuram after Niranjan asked her to enrol for an English course in Hyderabad. Though they met once every two months or so,both of them apparently had problems right from the beginning and six months ago went in for counselling, where Niranjan gave a written undertaking to be nice to his wife.
