Riding on a bumper wheat harvest this year,procurement by government agencies has reached a record this year at 25.47 million tonnes as against the previous record of 25.38 million tonnes achieved during 2009-10.
The Food Corporation of India,with state governments and their agencies,has procured the highest ever stocks of wheat during the current Rabi Marketing Season. These agencies have so far purchased 254.74 lakh tonne of wheat, FCI said in a press release on Friday,adding,The procurement of wheat is still continuing in the states.
As far as state-wise contribution is concerned,over 70 per cent of wheat procurement this year is from Punjab 10.9 million tonnes and Haryana 6.8 million tonnes. They were followed by MP 4.4 million tonnes,UP over 2 million tonnes and Rajasthan over one million tonnes.
This record procurement has been made possible by the record harvest of over 84.27 million tonnes estimated this year.
