Growth in coal output led to 7 increase in thermal power: Jaiswal

The power sector has been consistently maintained at 90 per cent of the quantity agreed.

Coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal on Thursday told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that nearly 10 per cent growth in Coal Indias coal output has helped increase the coal-fired power generation by 7 per cent during the July-September quarter of 2013-14.

Seeking to neutralise the criticism of coal shortage impeding thermal power generation, the coal minister described CILs performance last month and the second quarter of the current financial year as impressive in terms of output, dispatch and supplies to the power sector.

He also pointed out that CIL and its subsidiaries have signed 156 out of 173 FSAs involving generation capacity of more than 70,500 MW. I am confident that Coal India would be able to meet its annual target of 492 MT of offtake and including 377 MT to the power sector, Jaiswal said.

CILs supplies to the power sector has been consistently maintained at 90 per cent of the quantity agreed under the fuel supply agreements,Jaiswal told Singh in a letter on Thursday.
