Gaur in row after invoking caste

Former chief minister Babulal Gaur found himself in trouble today after using a caste reference while inaugurating a public toilet facility in Bhopal.

Former chief minister Babulal Gaur found himself in trouble today after using a caste reference while inaugurating a public toilet facility in Bhopal.

“What should be done by Shudras is being done by a Brahmin,’’ he said, referring to the founder of Sulabh International,Bindeshwar Pathak,as an upper-caste Brahmin. “Earlier this work was done by Shudras,’’ he added.

Gaur then tried to make amends by invoking Mahatma Gandhi and elaborating on how no work was below dignity. But he maintained that there was nothing wrong in what he said because caste was not decided by birth but by one’s work. He said he mentioned caste in his speech only to laud the virtues of the Sulabh sanitation movement started three decades ago.

While State BJP chief Prabhat Jha said Gaur was in the habit of cracking jokes and later retracting his statements, the Congress decided to file an FIR against him under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
