What 3 Idiots stated in a more hard-hitting,moving yet hilarious way is stated in a youthful, peppy fashion in this film – that no one is devoid of merit. It makes out its own case against parents insisting on good percentages, compelling their kids on career-choices and setting yardsticks that have more to do with social status than their kids aptitudes and dreams.
This time, three of its four protagonists,Ritesh (Jackky Bhagnani),Puja (Puja Gupta) and Nanj (Angad Bedi) all score under 40 per cent in their qualifying examinations, unlike their brainy fourth buddy Vishnu (Chandan Roy Sanyal) who is forced by his father (Akbar Khan) to follow him in his profession.
In a telling sequence in the climax,Ritesh tells the Education Minister (Mithun Chakraborty) that if the social system declares 35 per cent as pass marks but does not allow admissions to those who score less than 70 per cent, then those who score less than 70 should be declared as failed. But all this comes after the heartburns that the friends have to face, because of which they hit upon the absurd device of fooling their parents by organising a fake college!
The film, suspends logic intentionally, but to absurd lengths. A mysterious benign soul,Google Chand (Arshad Warsi) who lives in his sedan (!) is an unending source of funds, quick help and inspiration to Ritesh, and so is Bajirao (Riteish Deshmukh),whose one-point agenda in life is to become a principal. The fake college turns real dramatic license indeed! when the students who have joined F.A.L.T.U. (Fakirchand and Lakirchand Trust University) suddenly get motivated to become the best in their fields.
This is one of those sugar-coated pills where the sugar is excessive – and some basic intelligence has to be suspended as well. But what helps viewers overlook all these incongruities are the basic mood, the fast-paced (2.10 hours) and fresh script and the conviction of the debut-making director Remo DSouza and his effervescent cast, laced with a couple of peppy tracks by music makers Sachin-Jigar and lyricist Sameer. Jackky,Puja,Sanyal and Angad impress,as do the senior members of the cast.
RATING: ***
One star each for the fresh script, zingy direction and cast.
