Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today asked the Centre to halt anti-Naxal operations in Lalgarh, alleging “torture of tribals by security forces” which she said was “helping the CPM”.

Suggesting a CPM hand in the collision of trains at Sainthia and the derailment of the Jnaneswari Express to tarnish the Railways under her charge, she also alleged that CPM cadres were “carrying cockroaches from home and putting it in the food served by the Railways”.

Demanding the withdrawal of joint security forces from Lalgarh, she said her party would stage a rally there on August 9.

“The Prime Minister is a good man. He will understand. I will explain to him what this joint security operation means. The security forces are torturing tribals, women and killing innocent people. It is helping the CPM,” Banerjee told a Kolkata rally to mark Martyrs Day — 13 Youth Congress workers were killed in police firing on this day in 1993 when Banerjee was IYC chief.

“At the (Lalgarh) rally,we will give a call for CPM to quit Bengal,” she said, accusing Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee of arming CPM cadres in Salboni,Goaltore. Even ambulances, she alleged, were being used by the cadres to ferry arms.

Listing her action plan if voted to power,Banerjee said her government would launch a special development agenda for Lalgarh and the tribal areas of West Midnapore.

She said the CPM was trying to tarnish the image of the Railways ahead of the 2011 Assembly elections. Referring to the collision of trains at Sainthia and the derailment of Jnaneswari Express, she said both incidents took place when there were crucial political events in the state.

“On May 30,municipal elections were scheduled in the state and the Jnaneswari accident occurred on May 28. And two days before this rally, this incident occurred in Sainthia. Both incidents occurred at 2 am. Beyond this I will not say anything,” she told the rally.

“I resigned two times from the Ministry on my own… After the (Sainthia) accident, people are calling me to say Didi, don’t fall into CPM’s trap,” she said.
