A student of the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) committed suicide in her hostel room on Monday afternoon after reportedly reading her boyfriends announcement on a social networking site of their break-up,according to a preliminary police probe.
The 23-year-old first year management student,Malini Murmu from Jamshedpur, was found hanging in her hostel room around 5 pm on Monday. Preliminary investigations suggest the suicide may be related to the break-up with her boyfriend.
Police have found notes on Malinis laptop and message board in her room suggesting she was upset over the break-up. A note on the message board said,He ditched me.
From preliminary investigations it seems like a suicide connected to a post on a social networking site indicating a break-up, said DCP (South-East) P S Harsha.
Investigations revealed Malinis boyfriend,Abhishek, was in Bangalore recently and the couple had a fight. Abhishek subsequently posted a change in his relationship status on Facebook, saying,Dumped my new ex-girlfriend,possibly leading to the suicide, police said.
Malini came to IIM-B last June, having worked at Infosys after completing her B.Tech. from KIIT. We have lost a bright young person in the prime of her life, IIM-B said in a statement.
Her body was handed over to her father,B N Murmu,a senior manager at HPCL in Jamshedpur,on Tuesday. Police said they were trying to track down Abhishek.
Malini was a very emotional, bright and ambitious student. We are shocked to know about her death, said Surendra Deogam,a family friend of the Murmus.
