Delhi revenue from stamp duty,property rises

Delhi government's revenue collection from stamp duty,registration of properties has surged.

Delhi government’s revenue collection from stamp duty and registration of properties has surged by a whopping 62 per cent till January this year in comparison to what it earned during the corresponding period last fiscal.

Revenue department officials said government collected Rs 1,370 crore during April 2010 to January 2011 against Rs 843 crore collected during the corresponding period last year.

“It is a significant hike and it has become possible due to sustained efforts of the Revenue department,” Revenue Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said.

The revenue collection from registration fees has also increased significantly.

The government has collected a total of Rs 115.81 crore from registration fees during April,2010 to January,2011 against Rs 1.10 crore in the corresponding period of 2009-10.

The government has also registered a growth of nearly 26 per cent in revenue collection through sale of liquor in the first seven months of the current fiscal compared to the corresponding period in 2009-10.

The government collected Rs 1,103 crore as excise tax between April one and November 4 against its collection of Rs 878.44 crore in the same period last fiscal,officials said.

The city government has been facing financial difficulties due to an estimated spending of over Rs 16,000 crore in infrastructure development in the run-up to last month’s Commonwealth Games.

In its budget,the government had estimated a collection of Rs 1,680 crore from the sale of liquor in 2010-11 which is 11 per cent of the total estimated tax collection of Rs 15,582 crore for the financial year.

Officials in the Excise Department said the collection will go beyond the estimated amount.

The Delhi government had collected Rs 1,630 crore from sale of liquor in 2009-10 as against Rs 1,420 crore the preceding fiscal.

The revenue collection through the sale of liquor has seen a significant rise in the past nine years as the government’s total collection from it in 2000-01 was just Rs 560 crore.
