Court nod for dropping charges against Karmapa

The case was registered following seizure of currencies of 26 countries,including 1,20,197 Chinese Yuan,and Rs 50.3 lakh in Indian currency from Gyuto monastery.

The Una district court on Monday accepted the Himachal Pradesh government’s plea for dropping the charges against the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje in the case related to seizure of foreign currency from his monastery in January last year.

“After considering the application moved by the prosecution to drop his name from the chargesheet,the court decided to delete his name,” said assistant prosecutor Ram Swaroop Sharma.

The case was registered following seizure of currencies of 26 countries,including 1,20,197 Chinese Yuan,and Rs 50.3 lakh in Indian currency from Gyuto monastery.

The court’s order paves the way for trial of the nine other accused in the case,including a close aide of Karmapa and a property dealer from whose vehicle Rs 1 crore was seized.

The Karmapa said in a statement: “I am happy that the charges have been laid to rest… through the judicial procedure of democratic India.”
