Home Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday visited some border outposts in the western sector and urged BSF personnel deployed in the area to step up vigil to thwart all attempts by outsiders to cross into Indian territory, especially since the general elections are approaching.
Chidambaram visited the K K Barrier post in Ferozepur sector in Punjab and Satpal near Bikaner in Rajasthan to assess the security situation along the India-Pakistan border. Chidambaram said terrorists from across the border were almost certain to intensify their efforts to infiltrate into India with the aim of disturbing the elections.
While acknowledging the role being played by the BSF in guarding Indias borders,Chidambaram told the troops that they needed to redouble their efforts to stop all such attempts by infiltrators.
Chidambarams visit came a day after Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor said there were indications that infiltration bids from across the border were on the rise. General Kapoors comment had come in the context of the continuing gunfight between the Army and terrorists in the Kupwara sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
