Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today launched a scathing criticism of his successor, which quickly degenerated into a sheer personal attack.
Speaking at a public rally at Shyamnagar in North 24 Parganas,Bhattacharjee described Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a curse of Bengal. He alleged that her party, the Trinamool Congress, was directly involved with the chit fund scam and demanded a CBI inquiry.
Fuming at Mamata for showing a photograph of him along with the owner of a chit fund at a party rally at Shyambazar two days back,Bhattacharjee said he felt nauseating when he heard Mamata speak at rallies.
She showed a picture of mine. I was chief minister for 10 years, and so many photographs have been taken of me with other people. Can you keep track of that? What does she want to prove by showing my photograph published in a newspaper? I have taken money from chit funds? Sometimes people tell me to listen to her speak at rallies. I feel sick. Is she a chief minister? What kind of language does she use? Its the language of ruffians. She is a lady and then a chief minister. She is in fact a curse for Bengal. I feel like throwing up. I switch off the TV. I am telling you the truth,I feel out of sorts, Bhattacharjee lashed out.
Demanding a CBI probe into the chit fund mess,Bhattacharje also alleged that the Trinamool and chit funds had become synonymous. Before Assembly elections, chit fund agents launched a campaign in villages exhorting people to vote for Trinamool Congress. They told voters: we must defeat the CPM or we will have to wind up business. They have put partymen on top posts of chit funds who ran media businesses too. She said she did not know anything before the beginning of Baisakh (April 15). She knew everything. Her government admitted in the High Court that they knew it long back. She has double standards, the CPM poliburo member said.
