Oil spill: BP chief says hes deeply sorry

WASHINGTON: Chastened by heavy criticism,a grim-faced BP chief executive Tony Hayward insisted on Thursday he was devastated with this accident in the Gulf of Mexico and denied shunning tough questions from Congress on the nations worst oil spill. Im not stonewalling, Hayward told a House investigations subcommittee,responding to suggestions that he was dodging questions. Hayward said he was deeply sorry for the spill gushing now for more than eight weeks. I understand the seriousness of the situation,the frustrations and fears that continue to be voiced, he said.

Uzbek women,girls sexually assaulted

OSH: Some 400,000 people have been displaced by ethnic violence in southern Kyrgyzstan,the UN announced on Thursday. Ethnic Uzbeks interviewed in Osh said that ethnic Kyrgyz men had sexually assaulted and beaten more than 10 Uzbek women and girls,including some pregnant women,and children as young as 12,on a single street during the rampages that erupted last week. Members of the Kyrgyz community have denied accusations of brutality and have accused Uzbeks of raping Kyrgyz women.

16 dead in Colombian mine blast

BOGOTA: A coal mine explosion in northwestern Colombia believed to have been caused by a build-up of methane gas killed at least 16 miners and left dozens trapped more than 10 hours later,President Alvaro Uribe said on Thursday. The explosion on Wednesday night collapsed part of an access tunnel that is more than 2,000 metres long and drops to a depth of 150 metres,said provincial disaster coordinator John Rendon.

Rana trial rescheduled for next February

Chicago: The trial of Pakistani-Canadian terror suspect Tahawwur Hussein Rana,charged with involvement in the Mumbai attacks,has been rescheduled for February 14 next year. The trial hearing has been rescheduled for February 14 next year from November 1,2010,Ranas lawyer Patrick Blegen said. We wanted to wait and see how much discovery we are going to get, Blegen added.
