YANGON: Myanmars biggest opposition party said on Monday it would not register for this years election,meaning Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyis party will have no role in the military-led political process. The National League for Democracy NLD party,which won the last election in 1990 by a landslide but was never allowed to rule,said the entire party leadership had agreed not to run. Senior party members made the decision six days after Suu Kyi said she would not dream of entering if the decision was hers.

Gaddafi: Nigeria should split

SIRTE: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has suggested that Nigeria be broken up into several states along ethnic lines,in comments likely to worsen a diplomatic spat with Africas most populous nation. Nigeria recalled its ambassador from Tripoli earlier this month when Gaddafi proposed that Nigeria split into two countries formed of the Muslim north and Christian south. His comment followed violent clashes between Muslim and Christian gangs that killed hundreds around the Nigerian city of Jos.

Twin car bombs kill five in Iraqi holy city

KARBALA: Twin blasts caused by car bombs rocked Iraqs holy Shiite shrine city of Karbala on Monday,killing at least five people,medical officials and witnesses said. The explosions occurred around 15 minutes apart in the centre of the city,110 km south of Baghdad,the witnesses said. Five people were killed in the blasts and a further 55 wounded,according to a spokesman for Karbala hospital.

14 injured in NATO helicopter crash

KABUL: A NATO helicopter crashed Monday in southern Afghanistan,injuring 14 people,the international force said. Elsewhere in the south,a service member was killed in a bomb strike,NATO said,without providing further details. The coalition said no one is reported to have been killed in the helicopter crash and that all personnel on board were evacuated to nearby medical facilities.

Israel restricts access to Al-Aqsa mosque

JERUSALEM: Israel on Monday restricted access to Jerusalems Al-Aqsa Mosque compound amid concerns of fresh violence at the flashpoint site as Jews celebrate the week-long Passover holiday. Police said that Muslim men under the age of 50 and all non-Muslims will be barred from entering the compound which is sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

9 with militia links charged in US

WASHINGTON: Nine members of a Michigan-based Christian militia group have been indicted on sedition and weapons charges in connection with an alleged plot to murder law enforcement officers in hopes of setting off an anti-government uprising. In court filings on Monday,the Justice Department accused the nine people of planning to kill an officer.
