ISLAMABAD: Police are trying to determine whether five Americans detained in Pakistan had planned to attack a complex that houses nuclear power facilities. The young Muslim men,who are from the Washington,DC area,were picked up in Pakistan earlier this month. The men had a map of Chashma Barrage,a complex that along with nuclear power facilities houses a water reservoir and other structures,said Javed Islam,a senior police official in the Sargodha area of Punjab province.

US missionary held in North Korea

SEOUL: An American missionary is believed to be in North Korean custody after he illegally entered the communist nation on Christmas Day in an attempt to call attention to the reclusive countrys human rights conditions,an activist said on Sunday. Robert Park,28,slipped across the frozen Tumen River into the North from China on Friday. There has been no word from him since,but an activist who knows Park said he was likely arrested quickly by border guards or police in the authoritarian state.

Pirates claim 4 mn ransom paid for ship

MOGADISHU: A helicopter dropped a 4 million ransom payment on Sunday on to the deck of a Chinese coal ship hijacked by Somali pirates in mid-October,a pirate source on board the vessel said. The De Xin Hai and its 25 crew were carrying about 76,000 tonnes of coal from South Africa to the Indian port of Mundra when it was seized by gunmen in the Indian Ocean some 700 miles east of the Horn of Africa.

Six dead as ferry sinks in Philippines

MANILA: A passenger ferry sank in northern Philippines in a second sea disaster in three days. Six bodies,including three children,were recovered and at least 22 people were missing on Sunday. Search-and-rescue teams rescued at least 60 passengers and crew of the MV Baleno-9 and were scouring the seas for others still unaccounted for,a coast guard report said.
