SANAA: A radical imam,who communicated with the Fort Hood shooting suspect and called him a ‘hero’,was once arrested in Yemen on suspicion of giving religious approval to militants to conduct kidnappings. Yemen is now hunting for Anwar al-Awlaki to determine whether he has al-Qaeda ties. Al-Awlaki,who used his website to encourage Muslims to kill US troops in Iraq,disappeared in Yemen eight months ago,said his father.

Pirates seize cargo ship with 22 on board

Nairobi: The European Union Naval Force says Somali pirates have seized a cargo ship in the Indian Ocean with 22 crew members on board. Naval spokesman Cmdr John Harbour says that there are three Greeks and 19 Filipinos among the crew of the Greek-owned Filitsa. The ship,which was seized on Wednesday,is registered in the Marshall Islands.

Afghan President to be sworn in on Nov 19

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai will be sworn in for a second term on November 19,an official said on Wednesday. “On November 19,we will have a swearing-in ceremony of the President and a commission,led by the Minister of Defence,will lead this inauguration ceremony,” Ministry of Defence spokesman General Zaher Azimy said in Kabul.

‘US to press Pak to act against terror’

Washington: The US would keep on pressing Pakistan to act decisively against all terror groups within its territory as “just knocking down Taliban somewhere” does not affect the militants’ widespread syndicate,Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said. “We are going to keep pressing (Pakistan). Minister of State for Agriculture Karima Begum slapped Chief District Administrator of Paras district,Durga Prasad Bhandari,after he ignored her calls and failed to provide a new vehicle.

NRI jailed for cheating customers in UK

London: An Indian-origin woman,working as a mortgage adviser,has been convicted to 18 months of imprisonment for cheating customers. Forty-year-old Shruti Patel,has been charged of duping her clients and using nearly £170,000 to pay for private education of her children and buying a luxury car and threatening to commit suicide if she was reported to the police. Patel took loans and ran up debts in the names of two of her customers,one of whom was her close friend.
