48 IAS officers transferred in Rajasthan

JAIPUR: In a major bureaucratic reshuffle,the Rajasthan government has transferred 48 IAS officers,including the home secretary and four divisional commissioners. Home Secretary Pradeep Sen has been shifted to Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation RSRTC as MD while P K Dev,who was MD,RSRTC,will take charge as Additional Chief Secretary Home,Civil Defence,Jail departments,according to an official announcement made on Wednesday night.

15 mobiles,cash seized in jail raid

PATNA: The authorities on Thursday raided the high-security Beur Jail on the outskirts of the state capital and seized 15 cell phones,as many SIM cards and chargers,about Rs 37,000 in cash and contraband ganja,said Jail Superintendent O P Gupta. Several hardcore Naxalites and hardened criminals are lodged in this jail.

Pakistan releases Indian fishermen

ISLAMABAD: A second group of 100 Indian fishermen was released from a jail in the southern port city of Karachi on Thursday as part of a move by the Pakistani authorities to free 442 fishermen who have completed their prison terms. The fishermen,who were released from Malir Jail,set off for Lahore to be repatriated to India,prison officials said.

10 sentenced to RI in Bhagalpur case

BHAGALPUR BIHAR: A Bihar court has sentenced 10 persons to rigorous imprisonment for seven years for attacking a police party during Bhagalpur riots in 1989. Second Additional District and Sessions Judge Anil Kumar also slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 on each of them. The judge had on Tuesday acquitted 10 others in the case. The police party was attacked on November 14,1989,when it went to Kamarganj locality in Bhagalpur to inquire about the reported killing of five people by a riotous mob.

Telangana bandh on September 5

HYDERABAD: The Joint Action Committee of students of Osmania University here on Thursday called for a shutdown in Telangana on September 5 to press their demand for a proportional share for the region in the recruitment of Group-I service officers. The preliminary examination for the recruitment of Group-I services is scheduled to be held on Sunday.

Engineer abducted in Manipur

IMPHAL: Suspected Kuki militants have kidnapped Swami Kanta Singh,superintending engineer of Public Health Engineering Department. He was abducted at gunpoint from a place near his house at Kwakeithel area here on Wednesday evening. The motive for the kidnapping was not immediately known,sources said.

Leopard kills 8-yr-old in UP

BAHRAICH UP: An eight-year-old boy was mauled to death by a leopard in Katarniyaghat Wildlife Sanctuary,said a Forest Department officer here on Thursday. Akash was snatched from his mothers lap at Lakkhi village on Wednesday and later the victims body was recovered from a cane field in the evening.
