Dead man not from BSP

LUCKNOW: UP government said on Thursday that the man who was shot dead on stage during a BSP function at Gonda,was not a BSP man. Principal Secretary (Home) Kunwar Fateh Bahadur said Hanuman Sharan Shukla had a history of crime and was shot over an old enmity. Shukla was not a member of BSP and had never been associated with the party, he said.

Some lawyers support Dinakaran

Bangalore: A section of members of the Advocates Association of Bangalore on Thursday came out in support of Karnataka HC Chief Justice P D Dinakaran,facing land grabbing charges,saying he should not be transferred and be allowed to resume work. The advocates will also stage a protest here on Friday. Over 500 lawyers would take part in the protest and submit a representation to Governor H R Bhardwaj to appeal to the SC Collegium not to transfer Justice Dinakaran and direct him to resume judicial work, B K Nagraj,lawyers spokesman said.

Tipus sword sold for record price

London: Tipu Sultan’s 200-year-old sword has fetched a record 5,05,250 pounds at an auction at Sotheby’s,ten times its estimated price. The sword,bought by liquor baron Vijay Mallya in 2003,was estimated to fetch 50,000 to 70,000 pounds.

Commodore case: Navy inquiry over

New Delhi: The Navy has completed its inquiry into the case in which Commodore Sukhjinder Singhs objectionable photographs with a Russian woman were received here. The Board of Inquiry headed by a Vice Admiral-rank officer has submitted its findings to the Navys personnel branch on Tuesday. The report will now be forwarded to Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma.

Undertrial throws excreta at judge

MUMBAI: Apparently peeved at the slow pace of the trial of a murder case in which he is the accused,Rasheed Ayaz Shaikh threw a packet full of excreta at Additional Sessions Judge S Y Kulkarni in the court room on Thursday. A shocked Judge Kulkarni adjourned the proceedings for a brief while and went to his chamber to clean up. He,however,resumed work after a short recess. No case has been registered against Rasheed yet,sources said.

Youth beheaded in Bengal temple

KOLKATA: The West Bengal Police suspect that the beheaded torso of a youth found outside a Kali temple about 15 km from Bolpur town in Birbhum district on Thursday could be a case of human sacrifice. They said the gory ritual could have been conducted to mark Sankranti. The headless body was found near the altar of the temple in Paruldanga village. SP Rabindranath Mukherjee said they are probing the matter.

Mathura scrap shop blast toll 7

LUCKNOW: The toll in the blast at a Mathura scrap shop has rose to seven,with one more person succumbing to injuries on Thursday,UP Principal Secretary (Home) Fateh Bahadur said. DGP Karamveer Singh said examination of two shells found at the spot indicated they had been used by the Army earlier.
