Even as External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, while addressing a rally here on Tuesday, said there was an apprehension of terrorists striking and trying to disturb Lok Sabha elections,a powerful blast rocked the state capital just 1.5 km away from the venue. At least one person was killed and 13 were injured in the explosion that occurred at Jyotikuchi under Lokhra police station.

The police said the blast, believed to be a time device, occurred on a motorcycle that was parked by the roadside on the busy road in the western outskirts of the city. The blast occurred at around 6 p.m.

About an hour before his election rally,Mukherjee told a press conference that terrorists might try to cause “some mischief” during the elections. “While the Government will take utmost care in facing the challenges of threat from terrorists, what is more important is that the electors have not allowed mischief makers to disturb elections,” he told media persons.

“I have full confidence in the electors. They have not allowed mischief makers to disturb polls. The electorate has strongly refuted such threats in Jammu and Kashmir despite threats by terrorists and boycott calls of the Hurriyat,” Mukherjee said.

He also described influx from Bangladesh as a major problem and said it had assumed alarming proportions in Assam.

His rally went off undisturbed despite the blast. Mukherjee later addressed another election meeting at Paltanbazar, close to the Guwahati railway station.
