Having formed a view that the Omar Abdullah government has proved to be ineffective in tackling the crisis in Kashmir, the BJPs top leadership is set to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the situation in the Valley. The party has summoned its MLAs from the state to understand the situation on the ground.
Sources said the partys top brass discussed the worsening law and order situation in the Valley Tuesday night and it was felt that the MLAs should be called in so that their views could also be heard. Senior leaders L K Advani,Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj would discuss the situation with the legislators and are then expected to meet the Prime Minister.
The BJP top brass was of the view that the Chief Minister was neither able to control the situation nor inspire confidence among the people. Having sensed the mood of the people of the state, the BJP would not like to be seen as pushing too much for central intervention, but sources said it would urge the Centre not to give weak signals and act decisively to restore normality.
The party strongly feels that any attempt to dilute the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) would only encourage anti-national forces. On Tuesday,Abdullah had asked the Centre to take a re-look at AFSPA and the footprint of security forces. The BJP leaders would also like to get a sense on Omars demand for a political package from the Prime Minister.
The party has been criticising the Centre for not allowing the CRPF to function freely and has taken a view that the state governments soft approach towards stone-pelters has only helped in worsening the situation. It sees a Pakistan hand behind the trouble in the Valley and wants the Centre to work with the state in tackling the situation.
The party has also sought a discussion on the Valley situation in Parliament.
