A scientist with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre BARC was found dead, believed murdered,in his quarters on Monday night.

Mahadevan Iyer,48 and an engineer, had a head injury, and a synthetic string with traces of blood around his neck. Police believe he had died two days before the body was found. Neighbours at BARCs quarters at Anand Bhawan,Breach Candy, had been alerted by the stench.

Iyer, who lived alone, was initially believed to have committed suicide, but on Tuesday the Mumbai Police registered a case of murder following the postmortem report. The body had been found in a suspicious manner, they said. The door was locked from the outside, there was no sign of struggle and police suspect the hand of someone known to the scientist.

A neighbour opened the door with a duplicate key and found the body on the bed. The postmortem showed Iyer had suffered a haemorrhage in the head, which could be because of an injury to the head. We are now probing the case as one of murder, said Himanshu Roy,JCP Law and Order.

The police said part of the string around the neck was tied to one hand. Prima facie, the police say, they suspect the hand of an insider.

Iyer had lived in the quarter for seven years. His mother, who lives in suburbs, and his sister claimed his body.
