In light of the state governments plan to reserve 20 per cent quota for minorities in various welfare schemes,Minister of Minority Welfare Azam Khan has said his plan is to get 25 per cent of the benefits reserved for minorities.
Talking to the media on Friday,Khan said it will be a step to empower Muslims and other minorities since they cannot be given reservation in jobs due to constitutional restrictions.
I wanted that the quota for minorities in government schemes should be 25 per cent. There is constitutional hindrance in providing reservation in jobs to minorities. So we are trying to benefit the minorities in this manner, Azam Khan said.
Khan also defended the state governments stand on withdrawal of terror cases even after the high court imposed a stay. We are very serious on the issue. The state governments intention is that innocent people are released at the earliest. There is no question of going back on the issue, Khan said.
He said the government will present its case for the release of innocent persons more forcefully and effectively in the court. We will also examine where we erred in this matter. We will examine the procedural issues and will present our case with more force before the court, he said.
