A day after meeting Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav,Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari on Thursday reiterated his stand that the Ayodhya verdict not only violated the constitutional and legal confines but also negated established standards of international justice. Speaking at a meeting of eminent scholars from different schools of thought and Muslim intellectuals, the Shahi Imam said the Allahabad High Courts verdict was based on sheer faith.
The meeting of the Representative Convention of Muslims was convened by the Shahi Imam to review the grave situation in the wake of the verdict. The participants unanimously resolved to challenge vigorously the legal validity of the verdict based on sheer faith in the Supreme Court.
The Shahi Imam said: The verdict of the High Court provides legal validity to the shameful and criminal act of the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6,1992. Bukhari ruled out the possibility of any attempt to resolve the Babri Masjid issue through dialogue. Giving away of the mosque, its forcible occupation or allowing idolatry within its premises was totally haram (illegal), he said.
The meet was attended by many Muslim Ulemas and scholars, even many MPs. Jhangir Alam,an advocate and a member of the Babri Masjid Action Committee, said,There has been no consensus on the verdict. There is a lot of confusion and we are seeking answers to all those questions that the High Court has left unanswered.
