Arundhati Roys mother gets property share after 24 years

Twenty-four years after the Supreme Courts historical judgment giving equal rights to Syrian Christian women along with their male siblings

Twenty-four years after the Supreme Courts historical judgment giving equal rights to Syrian Christian women along with their male siblings on family property,a sub court in Kottayam on Wednesday executed the final decree in favour of litigant Mary Roy.

Mary Roy,a celebrated champion of womens fight for equality and gender justice,is mother of Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy. Mary,75,who lives in Kottayam, has got a share of the family property, spread across different locations. Of the 27 cents of property,Roy got two portions, her sister Molly three and brother Johns widow Elaine Singleton one piece.

My 50-year battle has finally yielded result. The fight was not for a piece of land, but to win womens rights guaranteed by the Constitution, she reacted.

Roy filed a petition in the Kottayam sub-court,seeking her share of the property, which her father had left behind after his death in 1960.
